Colts could have surprise trade partner in Vikings after quarterback injury

The Indianapolis Colts may have a chance to take advantage of a team in need of some quarterback depth.

It was revealed Tuesday that Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus after popping up on the injury report with knee soreness.

The No. 10 overall pick from the 2024 NFL Draft is out indefinitely, making veteran journeyman Sam Darnold the starter.

While the Vikings may be comfortable enough with Darnold as the starting quarterback until McCarthy is ready to return, they could be in the market to add some quarterback depth. The other bodies in the room are Nick Mullens and second-year quarterback Jarren Hall.

There's certainly a chance the Vikings simply stay put at the position, but the Colts also have some quarterback depth to spare. Anthony Richardson and Joe Flacco are entrenched as the projected pair on the active roster.

With Sam Ehlinger entering the final year of rookie season, the Colts could pull off a low-key deal with the Vikings if they're looking for depth.

Ehlinger and a 2025 sixth-round pick for one of the Vikings' three 2025 fifth-round picks might be intriguing to both sides.

A preseason darling, Ehlinger brings a dual-threat ability to the position. The Colts love the makeup he brings to the locker room and the versatility of his legs, but it's unlikely his future is in the Circle City.

The Colts have a big competition taking place for the QB3 spot between Ehlinger and a pair of undrafted rookie free agents — Kedon Slovis and Jason Bean. Both UDFAs looked serviceable, especially Bean and his electric rushing ability .

If the Colts are high enough on Bean as a developmental quarterback to work on the practice squad, Ehlinger could be on the block.

Should the Vikings want to add some quarterback depth without paying too much, Ehlinger could be a match.
