Veteran MLB umpire calls rare near-perfect game in Yankees' win

When Major League Baseball umpires are the topic of discussion, it usually does not include a positive discourse.

But if we're going to call out umpires when they make terrible calls — one of America's true pastimes — it's also fair to recognize when they get things right.

The latter is the case for 10-year veteran MLB umpire Gabe Morales, who called a near-perfect game behind the plate in the New York Yankees ' 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

According to Umpire Scorecards , Morales had a 99% overall accuracy and a 100% called strike accuracy. It was tied for the most accurate game called this season.

The Yankees let the game come down to the wire in the bottom of the ninth inning with the tying run at the plate.

With the win and a Baltimore Orioles loss, the Yankees enter Wednesday with a 0.5-game lead in the American League East.
