Cardinals could target former Dodgers infielder to give offense boost

The St. Louis Cardinals have lost five consecutive games and have fallen to two games below the .500 mark for the first time since mid-June.

Offense has been the main problem for St. Louis in 2024, and it stands to reason why they are at risk of recording a second straight losing season.

However, they could potentially still add a piece from outside the organization to help them. Thomas Gauvain of FanSided suggested that St. Louis could look at Amed Rosario , who was designed for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"Where Rosario will provide a benefit to the Cardinals is in his platoon split," Gauvain wrote. "The right-handed hitter is slashing .327/.355/.462 against left-handed pitchers for a wRC+ of 133 this year."

Rosario would be a perfect fit for St. Louis. They have struggled against left-handed pitching, and more right-handed bats certainly can't hurt.

The Cardinals have Brandon Crawford as their backup shortstop, but he has provided little to no value for the team. The 37-year-old is hitting .169 with one home run and a miserable .545 OPS.

If the Cardinals want a boost offensively and somebody who can back up Masyn Winn, Rosario would be a far better choice than Crawford.

With the trade deadline having already passed, the Cardinals would have to make a waiver claim to pick up Rosario, and hope that no teams with inferior records place claims.

The team with the worst record of those who make claims receives the player. But Rosario would certainly benefit St. Louis as they try to figure out what is going on with their lackluster offense.
