The Atlanta Falcons drafted Michael Penix Jr. as insurance. Insurance that the momentum that they will supposedly build under Kirk Cousins will last past his tenure as a Falcon. Insurance that if Cousins, who is coming off a season-ending injury in 2023, doesn't make it through the 2024 season, there is a capable quarterback ready to keep the Falcons competitive. That became evidently clear after hearing head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot speak about the two this offseason. What wasn't clear was that Morris was only going to play Penix in one preseason game, sitting him in preseason games two and three, leaving former starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke and undrafted free agent John Paddock to battle it out for the QB3 spot.

Leave it to the Falcons to find a way into the headlines for all the wrong reasons after a truly successful week of roster-building. Trading for Matthew Judon , signing Justin Simmons , making all the right moves to suggest that they are going to push to contend for more than just a wild card spot with Cousins at quarterback.

Now, they will have to answer why Penix, who supposedly was only going to be seen in the regular season, isn't going to be seen in the preseason. The NFL world isn't too happy about the decision and have made their dissenting opinions known.
