Blue Jays looking to extend slugger before reaching free agency, per insider

The 2024 season is essentially a lost cause for the Toronto Blue Jays. After two straight years in the postseason, Toronto has fallen out of contention this season.

The Jays are 57-66, which is good for last place in the American League East. They also are 11 games out in the Wild Card race.

However, they may be looking to bounce back into contention in short order. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today , Toronto is looking to extend one of their key stars.

"First baseman Vladimir Guerrero is also a free agent after the 2025 season, but the Blue Jays want to try signing him before he hits free agency."

The Blue Jays would be wise to try and keep Guerrero around if they plan on contending in 2025 and beyond.

Guerrero is the centerpiece of the ballclub and has been one of Major League Baseball's top hitters. The 25-year-old has hit 25 home runs and driven in 80 runs this season while hitting .319 with a .941 OPS.

He'll likely come with a high price tag if and when he hits free agency, so the Blue Jays would be smart to capitalize on the opportunity to keep him around long-term and do so at a good price.

It will be interesting to see how the team approaches the offseason and what they'll do to try and keep Guerrero around.

    The 25-year-old slugger is a four-time All-Star and a former Silver Slugger.
