For the vast majority of the fantasy football community each year, winning won't be in the cards. Most 12-team leagues issue one grand prize for the champion, often monetary and/or in the form of a trophy. Second place often wins a smaller amount, and third in most circles is lucky to get a refund on their buy-in. Seventy-five percent of the teams in the average fantasy league win nothing, so you might as well go into the season without expectations and tell yourself to simply have fun.
For most fantasy football managers, this begins with an entertaining draft with leaguemates, some light ribbing and razzing of your league's perennial Toilet Bowl managers, and perhaps the most important ingredient to and tone-setter for a fun season: a great name for your fantasy football team.
These are the times in which Dads go from average Joes to Kings of Punny Comedy. A witty play on words, timely pop culture reference, or jaw-dropping double-entendre can transform your team from a forgettable C+ roster to the talk of the league in a matter of moments.
DOMINATE YOUR DRAFT: 2024 Fantasy Football Cheat Sheet
Of course, naming your team isn't required — but let's just say it's strongly encouraged. Are you really, truly participating in the league if you don't change your team name from "Edward's Excellent Team" or "Team Smith" for four straight months?
Good luck with that bad juju — it's bad luck to believe in superstition, as Yankees legend and comedic genius Yogi Berra once said, but it's worse luck to enter a team into competition without a name. Putting zero effort into your team name and logo almost sets a psychological precedent that your team isn't worth your time and energy. Commit, soldier!
And that doesn't mean pick an outdated one, or one that tries way too hard, or one that 60 percent of the fantasy football universe will choose (how many people will draft Tua Tagovailoa and T.J. Hockenson early so that they can coin their team "Hock Tua"? It's the early clubhouse leader for most overused name, and might as well be the 2024 version of "Somewhere Over Dwayne Bowe."
The Sporting News has been a part of the fantasy football world for a very long time, so we've heard just about every pun-filled name out there. The goal today: spread the wealth and provide you with the full gauntlet of NFL player-related team names so you can window-shop before finalizing the identity of your team for the 2024 season.
Who knows — maybe our lengthy list of names will inspire you to come up with one of your own (please @ me if you think of a good one...@SloanPiva). The really crude and R-rated instant-classics can't live here, obviously — but they will more than likely live in infamy amongst the annals of your league.
If you're lazy and just want a good team name served up to you, don't worry. We probably have something that can help, regardless of who's on your team. Some are easy, like "Teenage Mutant Njigba Turtles," while others are a little more esoteric, like "Purdddy....Purdddy...Purdy Good." (Shout out to Larry David.) And there are instant hits like "Call of Jeudy," "Tua Infinity & Bijan," "Nacua Matata," and "Post Mahomes."
Like "The Simpsons" and the New York Giants? Try "Hidey-diddly-ho, Nabers!" on for size. Have kids who constantly force you to watch animated movies? Maybe "Stroudy with a Chance of Deep Balls" or "Fantastic Mr. Goff" are more your speed. Your children will be proud.
And even though we can't get too risque, our more immature readers might be able to get some mileage out of "99 Problems But a Pitts Ain't One," "Master Bateman," "Tee Baggers," "Big Dak Energy," and "Rock Out With Your Brock Out." Wow, big day for Brock Purdy, huh? So much for Mr. Irrelevant.
As will be the case on draft day, there's something for everyone here. We've definitely run the gauntlet and included as many names as we have seen, heard, or thought of this year and in years past. If we can help you find the perfect name for your team, well, that sounds like a small success. And even if the season is an abject failure of a four-month stretch, at least you lost with style.
