Napoli's sporting director, Giovanni Manna, has provided an update on the ongoing transfer situation involving Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

The Scottish international, who has been with United since his youth days, is reportedly nearing a potential exit, with several clubs showing interest.

Napoli have expressed interest in acquiring McTominay, but negotiations have been challenging. The Italian club recently had a loan offer for McTominay rejected by Manchester United, who are holding out for a fee of at least £25 million ($32.4m).

Despite this setback, Napoli remains keen on the player, but their ability to meet United’s demands hinges on a significant financial boost.

Napoli's interest in McTominay depends on Osimhen sale

Napoli's potential purchase of McTominay is closely linked to the possible sale of their star striker, Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian forward has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, and Napoli are reportedly waiting for the cash influx from his sale to fund McTominay’s transfer.

Manna confirmed that while Napoli is interested in McTominay, no further details could be shared at this stage. "McTominay and [Billy] Gilmour are very good players," Manna said. "But they’re not our players, so no comment. Full focus on the game, and then we will focus again on transfers."

The situation surrounding Osimhen is also critical, as his departure would pave the way for McTominay’s potential arrival in Naples.

Manna acknowledged the complexities involved, stating, "His desire [to leave] is clear. We are working with his entourage to find the best solution. He is under contract for another two seasons, so if we don’t find a solution by August 30, we’ll have to talk to the player."

As the transfer window nears its close, Napoli will need to act quickly if they hope to secure McTominay's services.
