Star infielder hoping to sign with Giants this winter, per insder

The San Francisco Giants currently are on the outside looking in on the National League Wild Card race.

San Francisco currently has a 63-63 record and is four games out of the final Wild Card spot. The Giants could make a run and have plenty of time to make up some ground in the standings, but it will be tough.

The Giants are in a better spot than they were in last year and one of the reasons why was a solid offseason. San Francisco landed both star third baseman Matt Chapman and ace Blake Snell among other moves.

San Francisco has its work cut out for it down the stretch and then will have to make some tough decisions in free agency. It sounds like Chapman will be opting out of his deal with the Giants, but he wants to return, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.

"Giants third baseman Matt Chapman is expected to opt out of his contract after the season, knowing that he can earn more on the open market than $17 million in 2025, $18 million in 2026, with a mutual $20 million option in 2027," Nightengale said. "Chapman is having his best full season since 2019 and wants to stay in San Francisco, with the Giants expected to talk to him about an extension."

Chapman has been a steal for the Giants and if they end up making the playoffs, he will be a major reason why. It would be tough to lose him in free agency after a great season but it sounds like he wants to stick around with the club for the foreseeable future.
