New Eagles pass rusher getting rave reviews in training camp

The Philadelphia Eagles are getting strong returns in training camp from one of their top free agent signings.

EDGE rusher Bryce Huff was one of the team’s highest graded defensive players during last week’s preseason game in Foxboro , as tight end Austin Hooper of the Patriots can attest:

Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert, who’s been going head-to-head against Huff in practice, singled out the new addition following Sunday’s training session:

“You can see him making strides in his pass rush, in the run game, just playing physical," Goedert said. "That defensive end is such an important position in all aspects of the game, and I think he’s been doing a really good job proving to everyone that he can play both sides of it.”

The Eagles signed Huff to a three-year deal in March, which aided the team’s decision to trade star pass rusher Haason Reddick to the New York Jets . Huff was productive for a good Jets defense in 2023, piling up 10 sacks and 21 quarterback hits , and he was one of the stars of last week’s dominant joint practice with the Patriots.

Huff was more of a part-time pass rusher with the Jets, used mostly on third downs and in two-minute situations. The Eagles and new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio are looking to change that in 2024 .

“We’d like for him to be more of an every down player, and he needs to learn to do that,” Fangio said. “And in the game (against the Patriots) he did some stuff that he really hadn’t done up to this point yet, which was great to see. Great for his confidence, great for our confidence in him. So those 12, 15 plays that he got in the game were very fruitful for him.”
