Chargers release quarterback while getting great news on Justin Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers have had a tumultuous couple of weeks with their quarterback position. Well, their backup quarterback position.

On Monday, the Chargers released Max Duggan, the former Heisman Trophy candidate from TCU. The writing was on the wall for that move after Duggan didn't get into the team's last preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Chargers drafted Duggan in the seventh round last year, but he has yet to see regular-season action. He took the Horned Frogs to the College Football National Championship game in 2022 after taking out Michigan, coincidentally coached by Jim Harbaugh.

Luis Perez and Easton Stick remain on the roster. Perez has made great strides, outlasting both Duggan and Casey Bauman after being signed just two weeks ago. It appears that for the final preseason game this Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys, the Chargers will have a one-on-one battle between Perez and Stick for the No. 2 job.

    Justin Herbert returns to practice

The Chargers have held Justin Herbert out of practice and preseason games due to a plantar fascia injury. But Herbert returned to the practice field on Monday, putting him on track to be ready for Week 1, which was the original diagnosis.

As long as the injury doesn't trouble him throughout the year, the Chargers will be in good hands. But they need to have a better idea of what they have at the backup spot and Stick has not performed well in that role.

With a good showing against the Cowboys, Perez could easily steal the job.
