Braves land ex-Yankees slugger to fill biggest roster hole, per insider

The Atlanta Braves entered the 2024 Major League Baseball season with extremely high expectations.

Atlanta was the best regular season team in baseball last year and entered the 2024 campaign hoping to get over the hump. Injuries have completely dismantled the Braves' season, but Atlanta still can end up making the playoffs.

The Braves aren't at full strength by any means and got dealt yet another blow recently as Austin Riley is set to miss time. Atlanta isn't mailing it in, though, and landed former Cleveland Guardians, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels, and Detroit Tigers utility man Gio Urshela on Tuesday, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

"Gio Urshela, released on Sunday by the Tigers, is closing in on a major league agreement with the Braves, The Post has learned," Sherman said. "Atlanta announced Monday that third baseman Austin Riley would be lost 6-8 weeks with a fractured right hand."

Urshela is a great pickup for the Braves and should see a significant amount of time down the stretch. Atlanta currently has the third National League Wild Card spot but the New York Mets are just 1 1/2 games behind. Hopefully, the addition of Urshela will help keep the Braves afloat down the stretch until they start to get a little healthier.
