Mets named top 2025 destination for superstar, two-time Cy Young pitcher

If anything is going to keep the 2024 New York Mets from reaching the postseason, it's their pitching.

Since the start of June, the Mets have played inspired baseball, led by a high-powered offense that ranks among the top 10 in all major categories. But unlike their lineup, anchored by names like Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso, New York's starting rotation is devoid of star power.

Since Kodai Senga went down with a calf injury in his first start of the season, the Mets have had no one on the roster they could consider an ace. While Luis Severino and Sean Manaea have had solid seasons, the Mets are the only playoff contenders lacking a true number one.

So regardless of whether or not they snag a postseason berth, one might reasonably expect the Mets to go out and pursue a true ace to add to their 2025 pitching staff. In fact, one baseball writer believes they will go after arguably the biggest name on the market.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report listed the Mets as his number-two destination for Snell in free agency this winter, behind only Snell's former team , the San Diego Padres.

"The Mets could use a pitcher like Snell right now," Rymer said. "It would be a reach to say they're contending despite their rotation, but it hasn't been a strength. And because of Kodai Senga's absences, it hasn't had a proper No. 1 all year."

Snell, 31, has been a menace for the San Francisco Giants of late. After an injury-riddled first half, he's pitched to a 1.34 ERA since the All-Star break, including a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds, while striking out 59 batters to lead the big leagues.

Though the Mets were believed to be sniffing around Snell both last offseason and in the trade deadline, there are no reports their pursuit of the lefty ace got serious. That could all change this winter, assuming Snell opts out of his $35 million player option with the Giants for 2025.

The Mets' lineup looks locked and loaded for many seasons to come. If they can acquire Snell, which is a big if, they may be well-positioned to compete for their first World Series title since 1986.
