Astros listed as potential fit for Giants ace in free agency

The Houston Astros have overcome a lot of obstacles this season. They got off to a 10-20 start and have ascended to the top of the American League West.

The team is once again looking like a serious threat to contend for a World Series title and with all the pieces in place, they could be dangerous this October.

However, they might have a hole to fill in the offseason if Justin Verlander's vesting option for 2025 doesn't kick in. This will force them to go out and search for an ace.

Zach Rymer of Bleacher Report listed Houston as a fit for Blake Snell.

"Remember when the Astros were linked to Snell for a hot minute?" Rymer wrote. "A pursuit this winter would make more sense, as they'll have Justin Verlander coming off their books and Framber Valdez positioned to do the same after 2025.

The Astros would be an interesting fit for Snell. It's clear that the team still has winning as its top priority, and if they want to remain relevant in the future, it makes sense for them to pursue another ace, especially with Verlander near the end of his career.

The Astros don't always dish out large contracts, typically preferring to build a winner from within. But it wouldn't hurt to at least check in on the reigning Cy Young.

Snell is already expected to opt out of his deal with the San Francisco Giants. He got off to a rough start but has since lowered his ERA to 3.67, rebuilding his value and putting himself in a position to receive the long-term contract he desired last offseason.

We'll see if Houston takes a look at him.
