New York Mets listed as potential fit for top free agent slugger

The New York Mets have been a surprise contender this season.

After a fire sale at last year's trade deadline, they were not expected to be a contender in 2024. However, they are just 1 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves for the third National League Wild Card spot.

In the offseason, New York could potentially look to go big in free agency. Mark Feinsand listed them as a potential fit for slugger Juan Soto.

Soto has spent this season with the New York Yankees after being acquired from the San Diego Padres. The 25-year-old is hitting .302 with 36 home runs, 93 RBI, and a 1.045 OPS.

Feinsand predicts that Soto will receive a deal of at least 10 years and $500 million. The Mets are a team that could certainly pull something like this off.

It would definitely make an interesting story for Soto to leave the Yankees for their crosstown rivals, but it would send a message that the Mets are prepared to go all in and win at all costs.

New York currently owns a record of 66-61, so their playoff hopes are very much alive. But adding Soto next year would be a good first step to building a true World Series contender.

The Mets could potentially lose Pete Alonso, so Soto could be the perfect replacement offensively. We'll see how Soto's market develops and if the Mets will ultimately be one of the teams interested.
