Patriots offensive coordinator gives simple reason why Drake Maye is not starting yet

The New England Patriots have less than a week before head coach Jerod Mayo said he wants to have his starting quarterback position decided.

At the moment, Jacoby Brissett, who signed back with New England this offseason after the team drafted him in 2016 and traded him before the start of the 2017 season, is expected to be under center in Week 1.

However, there are still a few practices and the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders left for the Patriots to make a switch to third-overall pick Drake Maye.

Why doesn't Maye have the job right now? Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt answered that question with just a name - " Jacoby. "

Brissett has experience as a starter in this league, playing in 79 games and starting 48 of them in his eight years in the league. He also has experience working with Van Pelt, who was his offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns in 2022.

Maye hasn't wowed anyone since arriving in New England, but neither has Brissett, and there's more upside with the rookie.

If Brissett still can't move the offense, as he struggled to do in the last game against the Philadelphia Eagles , and Maye shows flashes, maybe Mayo, Van Pelt and company will make the switch.
