49ers could part ways with promising offensive weapon, per insider

The San Francisco 49ers clearly won't be able to keep everyone that currently is on the roster.

San Francisco is loaded throughout the roster and will have to start making some tough choices in the very near future. The 49ers will have to trim down their roster and one position group that could end up being altered is the running back room.

Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey clearly is the team's starter and a massive piece of its future. McCaffrey is one of the best players in football and clearly will get the majority of all of the touches out of the backfield.

San Francisco has a lot of depth behind him at this point and this could lead to someone like Elijah Mitchell being cut or traded over the next few weeks, according to CBS Sports' Josh Edwards.

"Even Kyle Shanahan, who loves running backs, can not justify keeping all who are on his current roster," Edwards said." "In addition to Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell, the team drafted a fourth-round running back, signed another promising college free agent, and signed veteran Matt Breida, who spent 2017-2019 in San Francisco, earlier this month."

Mitchell has dealt with some injuries throughout his young career -- even this summer -- and it has been hinted that he could end up losing his role. He was extremely promising as a rookie with just under 1,000 rushing yards in just 11 games played, but injuries have hurt his career to this point. Then, the addition of McCaffrey completely changed his role with the team.

Don't be surprised if another club attempts to nab him from San Francisco and take a chance on him.
