Packers veteran quarterback predicted to be cut in surprise roster move

The Green Bay Packers aren't sweating the starting quarterback position. They know Jordan Love is their man.

But what if, as so often happens in the National Football League, Love goes down due to injury? The Packers are expected to compete for a playoff spot after making it in 2023, but a quarterback injury can always threaten to derail a season.

The incumbent backup to Love is Sean Clifford, a second-year former Penn State quarterback who appeared in just two games last season. Clifford has seen the majority of the first-team reps thus far in the Packers' two preseason games.

However, Clifford's performance has left much to be desired. And one writer believes the Packers need to look elsewhere to fill the all-important backup role before the season gets underway.

Sayre Bedinger of FanSided predicted on Thursday that Clifford will be cut from the Packers before the start of the regular season.

"The Packers cannot afford to "need" Sean Clifford for any length of time during the regular season. Not with a player like Ryan Tannehill sitting out there in free agency right now, and a number of other interesting names who could soon be made available via trade," Bedinger said. "The Packers need to make a change."

Clifford, 26, appeared only in kneel-down situations in the regular season as a rookie. This preseason, he has gone 16-for-29 passing for 154 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception.

Clifford's last chance to impress will likely be Saturday's preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens. Then, the Packers will have to decide whether he is capable of carrying the torch into the season.

Count Bedinger among those who aren't buying it.
