It was a frightening scene during Thursday night’s preseason game between the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs.

The sight of Chicago Bears safety Douglas Coleman III being taken on the field on a medical cart and then leaving Arrowhead Stadium in an ambulance.

Coleman was injured while making a tackle on the opening play of the second half. He collided with the Chiefs’ Cornell Powell and fell to the ground. His teammates reacted immediately by calling for assistance, with Kansas City training staff arriving first to evaluate Coleman.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters after the game that Coleman was able to move his limbs on the field and gave his team a “thumbs-up.”

The good news continued on Friday. In an interview with 670 The Score in Chicago, Eberflus said that Coleman would be headed home after being hospitalized overnight in Kansas City.

Coleman has yet to appear in an NFL game. Though he earned First-team All-Big 12 honors in 2019, he went undrafted in 2020. He did sign with the Denver Broncos as a free agent before being released that September.

Coleman signed with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League in 2021, playing primarily as a linebacker. In 2023 he appeared in 17 games, registering 60 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions, and scored two defensive touchdowns.

He signed with the Bears on January 10, 2024.
