Packers could sign intriguing veteran quarterback surprisingly cut by Dolphins

All preseason, the Green Bay Packers have watched their quarterbacks make a mess on the field.

Though Jordan Love is locked in as the starter for this year, and hopefully many more, the Packers have learned that they don't really have a capable backup behind him. Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt have both had miserable preseasons while competing for that roster spot.

Neither Clifford nor Pratt has ever thrown a pass in a regular season game, and how each has played to this point has not inspired confidence that they could do so successfully if called upon. Fortunately, the Packers now have the option to bring in another quarterback.

Mike White, a three-year veteran who has played for the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, is now available, and it would make a lot of sense for the Packers to pounce on him.

As reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, White was cut by the Dolphins on Sunday, making Skylar Thompson the lone quarterback on Miami's roster behind starter Tua Tagovailoa. White is now an unrestricted free agent, eligible to sign with any of the 32 teams.

White, 29, has had some bright spots in his career, despite a 2-5 career record as a starter.

He memorably led the New York Jets to a win over the eventual AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals in his first career start in 2021. Then, he had a near-perfect passer rating in his first start of 2022, a 31-10 drubbing of the Chicago Bears.

Overall, White has a 62.6% career completion percentage, with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Is White ever going to compete for a long-term starting job in the NFL? Likely not, but his previous experiences have prepared him for an emergency fill-in role far better than either of the Packers' current options.

The Packers cannot afford to wait around for Clifford or Pratt to develop into a capable NFL quarterback. Their team is too talented to entrust their emergency role to anyone without real experience. White has the type of pedigree Green Bay needs to work behind Love.
