Colts defender surprisingly released among first wave of roster cuts

The Indianapolis Colts announced nine roster moves ahead of Tuesday's deadline to cut the roster down to 53 players.

Among those nine players let go included safety Ronnie Harrison Jr., which is somewhat of a surprise as it seemed the veteran was leaning toward making the roster.

One of the biggest areas of concern for the Colts entering the season is the safety position. While Julian Blackmon is returning on a one-year deal, there are a lot of question marks regarding the spot opposite him.

It seems Nick Cross will be the starter to begin the season with fellow third-year defender Rodney Thomas II mixing in as well.

With Harrison released, it seems Trevor Denbow's spot on the roster is secure considering his prowess as a special teams star.

Among the other players let go by the Colts in the first wave of roster moves include the release of WR Tyrie Cleveland, DE Derek Rivers and WR Greg Ward. Meanwhile, CB Clay Fields III, K Spencer Shrader, QB Kedon Slovis, WR Derek Slywka and LB Mike Smith Jr. were waived.

The Colts have until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET to finalize cuts for the initial 53-man roster.
