NFL coach says 'everybody is scared to death' of Colts' Anthony Richardson

The Indianapolis Colts have a vision of what quarterback Anthony Richardson could be in the NFL.

Entering his second season after missing the majority of his rookie campaign due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, it's likely going to be a volatile season for the 22-year-old.

However, the peaks in Richardson's game can rank him among the league's best signal-callers and if he can develop into a more complete quarterback, the Colts will have a true trump card.

In polling NFL head coaches, coordinators and executives to rank quarterbacks in tiers for The Athletic , one coach had a pretty compelling quote about how the league feels about Richardson.

“Everybody is scared to death of him in the NFL," said the anonymous head coach to The Athletic.

Richardson was ranked in Tier 4 among NFL quarterbacks, which was defined as a quarterback who "could be an unproven player (not enough information for voters to classify) or a veteran who ideally would not start all 17 games."

It's a fair ranking considering the incomplete rookie season Richardson put together because of the shoulder injury.

Another offensive coach had a specific comparison for Richardson's game — one that has been made plenty since he was drafted No. 4 overall in 2023.

"He’s the closest thing to Cam Newton since Cam, being a man that big who can run the ball and rip it,” said the offensive coach.

There are going to be plenty of growing pains for Richardson and the Colts during his second season. The preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals was proof of that.

But the upside he brings as he continues to develop his game is unmatched. The combination of his rushing ability and big arm is the perfect match for Shane Steichen's offense.

There are going to be plenty of highs and lows throughout the season, but NFL coaches recognize the upside he brings on a play-to-play basis.
