Packers cutting starter after losing roster battle in training camp

The Green Bay Packers are starting to cut down the roster.

Green Bay has until Tuesday afternoon to cut the roster down to 53 players and that means we will finally find out who won each of the roster competitions. One area of the team that has been in question throughout the summer is the kicking job.

Anders Carlson was the team's kicker in 2023 and finished the year by going 27-of-33 on field goals. He also finished the season 34-of-39 on extra points.

He had been competing with Alex Hale and Greg Joesph for the Packers' kicking job and it seems as though he has lost. Green Bay reportedly cut Carlson on Tuesday, according to Pro Football Talk's Myles Simmons.

"It’s not yet clear who won Green Bay’s kicking competition, but we now know one player who didn’t," Simmons said. "According to multiple reports, the Packers are waiving 2023 sixth-round pick Anders Carlson. Carlson, 26, was the Packers kicker all season last year and made 27-of-33 field goal attempts along with 34-of-39 extra points. But Green Bay had two other kickers on the roster for most of training camp.

"Then Carlson missed a 32-yard attempt wide right in the fourth quarter of Green Bay’s preseason finale against the Ravens on Saturday. Carlson’s brother, Daniel, is the Raiders kicker. The Packers could choose one of the other kickers they had in camp, Alex Hale or Greg Joesph. Or they could go another route and pick up a kicker who was with another team through waivers or trade."

It wouldn't be too shocking to see Carlson land with a team in the near future. Green Bay has to make plenty of tough decisions ahead of the Tuesday deadline and it already has gotten a head start.
