Dodgers among top landing spots for superstar slugger, per insider

The Los Angeles Dodgers certainly have a lot of star power on the roster right now.

Los Angeles already is one of the best teams in baseball and has a strong chance of winning the World Series this season. This won't stop the Dodgers from speaking to some of the top free agents in baseball this winter.

New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto clearly will be the top free agent available and he has been linked to the Dodgers on a few occasions already. ESPN's Jeff Passan mentioned Los Angeles as one of the few teams that can afford him this winter, but a deal is unlikely.

"Now, doing so with the aid of logic and history helps increase the likelihood such speculation proves correct," Passan said. "And it's with that knowledge -- the recognition that age, as much as skill, drives baseball free agency, and Soto's combination of both is singular -- the industry agrees the floor for his contract will be $500 million.

"It will go higher, though, and when it does, that number will frighten away a vast majority of teams. Some of them could afford it; many will choose not to. This is the history of free agency. There are ultimately at most a handful of spenders for the biggest free agents. In Soto's case, the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and both Los Angeles teams could likely afford him but are long shots to make a real push. Seattle could use him but will be scared off by the money."

Los Angeles already has three of the best offensive players in baseball in Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman. Landing Soto would take the Dodgers' offense to an even higher level, but a deal shouldn't be considered likely.
