The Red Sox are a dark horse candidate for the biggest superstar on the market

The Boston Red Sox have been named a dark horse in the race to get superstar outfielder Juan Soto, per Jeff Passan .

Soto is an amazing player, with a career batting average of .286, 197 homers, an OBP of .422, and an OPS of .958. He has a batting title, a World Series with the Washington Nationals in 2019, and multiple Silver Sluggers.

According to Passan, the Sox are one of four dark horses, the others being the LA Angels and Dodgers, and the Chicago Cubs. The only problem with the Sox getting him is how much he’s going to want for his contract. Soto is probably looking at a contract worth $500 million, and that’s just the base price.

Something the Sox have going for them though is their payroll is very low, with the only true big contract they have is for Rafael Devers, who is contracted to make $313.5 million over a decade. However, the past few years have made Sox fans think of the owners of the team as miserly, since they haven’t truly competed since 2021.

While landing Juan Soto would be insane for the Sox and they should do it if they can, they should probably be looking to upgrade their pitching staff instead. There are a bunch of starters and relievers in the new free agency class, so they should get to deciding who to target soon.
