Former Washington Commanders defender claimed by Panthers on waiver wire

A former Washington Commanders defender has found a new home on the waiver wire with the Carolina Panthers.

Cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, who spent the last two seasons with Washington, technically was a top waiver claim by the Panthers, the team that held the first pick in the waiver wire order.

A former sixth-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers, Castro-Fields spent his rookie year mostly on injured reserve, then on the practice squad last season.

Now, Castro-Fields is part of a massive overhaul of the cornerback depth in Carolina, where the Panthers have already added Lonnie Johnson Jr., Keenan Isaac and Shemar Bartholomew. The team added six players via the waiver wire, cutting six of their initial 53-man roster in the process.

As for the Commanders, names like former first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes have stuck on the initial 53, though the team could make further moves in the coming weeks to a secondary that seems light at the spot.
