The Rays and Padres begin a three-game series from Tropicana Field on Friday night, airing exclusively on Apple TV+ as a part of 'Friday Night Baseball.'
Few teams are playing better baseball than San Diego, which entered play on Thursday with a whopping 26-10 mark since the All-Star Break. While there are a number of catalysts for the Padres' success — including a stout bullpen and strong front-line starting pitching — few players have been more instrumental than Jackson Merrill.
The rookie center fielder is hitting .290 with 19 HR and an .809 OPS, along with outstanding defense. Merrill, just 21, has a .980 OPS through 24 games in August, helping the Padres close in on the first-place Dodgers in the National League West.
The Rays, still on the fringes of the American League wild card race, are seeing exciting glimpses from their own rookie phenom, third baseman Junior Caminero. Caminero has an .802 OPS in 15 games since being recalled from the minors on Aug. 13, though he found his stride at the end of Tampa Bay's 10-game road trip, hitting .310 across his last eight games.
