Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni spoke to reporters Sunday ahead of the team’s upcoming trip to Brazil, and among the topics discussed was the status of starting tight end Dallas Goedert.

Goedert was a mainstay on the field throughout training camp before mysteriously missing practice on Aug. 21 with an oblique injury. He has not been on the field since the injury was first reported, leading to some worry and speculation about his availability for the team’s Sept. 6 season opener against the Green Bay Packers in Sao Paulo.

Sirianni was asked specifically about the status of Goedert and cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, who was also a non-participant in Thursday’s practice. The fourth-year head coach of the Eagles was mum, speaking in generalities and lumping both players together in his response:

You guys will get an injury report on … Tuesday. You might not get it as early as you normally have (this week). Year 4 now, you kind of know where I am on injuries and talking about injuries and stuff like that. They’re working hard to get back.”

Both Goedert and Rodgers are listed as starters on the team’s unofficial depth chart entering Week 1 of the regular season. In the case of Goedert, it’s also telling that Grant Calcaterra is currently the only other active tight end on the 53-man roster.

Still, it’s hard not to overreact to injuries when it comes to Goedert, who's dealt with setbacks throughout his six-year tenure in Philadelphia. He was limited to 14 games in 2023 due to a fractured forearm that required surgery, finishing with 59 catches for 592 yards and three touchdowns. In 2022, he landed on IR with a shoulder injury. Goedert has only played a full slate of regular season games once in his career, and that was his rookie season in 2018 when he was the backup to Zach Ertz.

Tuesday’s first official injury report will be a better indicator of Goedert’s status for the opener. The Eagles are planning to practice at home on Monday and Tuesday this week before traveling on Wednesday. Even a limited practice session should be enough to put Goedert on track for the NFL’s anticipated debut in Brazil.
