Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are playing an extremely public game of contract chicken. On that note, it's looking more and more likely this situation will not end well for the NFL franchise.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, there is some indication that Prescott will ultimately end up testing free agency in 2025.

Fowler shared his perspective in a recent ESPN+ column and noted that it's "looking like free agency at this point," per his sources.

“The Prescott negotiations are confounding because the Cowboys have made clear publicly and privately that they want to extend the quarterback and have every intention of doing so. And they have a history of paying their stars, even as those stars drive up the price.

But a line from someone with direct knowledge of the situation midweek — ‘looking like free agency at this point’ — gives me pause. Now, Dallas has four days to intensify negotiations, but it hasn’t happened to the level a deal of this magnitude needs.”

Prescott is coming off an MVP-finalist season that saw him rank among the league leaders in many key quarterback stats. Last year he passed for 4,516 yards with a league-leading 36 touchdowns and just nine interceptions.

In his eight NFL seasons, Prescott has produced a record of 73-41 as a starter while leading the Cowboys to the playoffs in five of those eight campaigns.

Team owner Jerry Jones has hinted that he's unhappy with how things have gone in the postseason with Prescott at the helm. Jones has also indicated he is fine with letting Prescott play out his current contract.

All signs indicate that may be exactly what happens. Though, if it does, Prescott may be perfectly content with signing elsewhere, as he's indicated already .

It's going to be a fascinating season at The Star.
