Tyler Lockett likes changes to Seahawks offense: 'Sometimes new is good'

Seattle Seahawks great Tyler Lockett is entering his 10th season in the NFL. That's a special accomplishment for anyone, but especially one as small as Lockett, who has to compete against athletes who are often twice his size.

The long-time veteran is getting a breath of fresh air this year schematically, as Seattle has changed offensive coordinators for the third time in his career. This will be the first time he's gotten to work with a playcaller who wasn't chosen by former head coach Pete Carroll , though. For his part, Lockett sounds excited to dig in under new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and he likes the variety.

Here's what Lockett said about the new-look Seahawks offense yesterday when he spoke with the media yesterday, according to Gregg Bell at the Tacoma News Tribune.

Tyler Lockett on new Seahawks offense

“I mean, sometimes new is good... It’s hard to imagine if you were in the same offense for 10 straight years if there would be any excitement for you coming in. Meetings would be a lot more difficult because you know everything left and right... It’s been interesting because I think every three years, I’ve had a new offensive coordinator. And so it’s allowed me to approach the game differently, and it’s allowed me to see the game differently and learn different ways and unique abilities to be able to use my skills.”

Looking ahead, this might be the last ride for Lockett with the team that drafted him back in 2015. During the offseason he agreed to a restructured contract - effectively taking a significant paycut - in order to stay on the roster. Next year the team can save $17 million if they cut him before June 1, so no matter how well he plays there's a chance he will end up a cap casualty.

No matter how the rest of his time with the team goes, Lockett has established himself as the second-greatest receiver in franchise history after Steve Largent. He may not make the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but he has a great case for the Ring of Honor.
