The Eagles are kicking off the 2024 season in style — literally.

Philadelphia begins this year's NFL regular season in a different location. The Eagles and Packers are set to meet in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Friday for their season opener, playing at Corinthians Arena as a part of the 2024 NFL international series .

The site for the game isn't the only unique part of the contest. The Eagles are debuting a completely new look for the special event — white jerseys and black pants, with the kicker being black helmets.

This isn't the first time the Eagles will wear black helmets, but in the past, the team would wear them with black uniforms. Now, it's a little mix and match for Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the rest of the NFC East crew.

Here is more to know about the Eagles and why they are wearing black helmets.

Why are the Eagles wearing black helmets?

The Eagles announced ahead of the Week 1 contest in Brazil that the team will be sporting black helmets, along with a white jersey and black pants.

The choice to go with black helmets isn't just because it's the season opener. There is a tie-in for the local Brazilian fans who will be attending the contest.

The local team that plays at Corinthians Arena — Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, a soccer club that plays in Brazil's top professional league, Brasileirao — is known for wearing black. The team's arch-rival, Palmeiras, sports green.

The Packers will be wearing their green uniforms for the game, so for the Eagles to cater to the home crowd, the team elected to dip into more of the black color scheme, replacing the typical midnight green helmets with black ones.

Have the Eagles worn black helmets in the past?

The Eagles' black helmets are new-ish to the franchise.

When the NFL loosened the rules on uniforms in 2022, it opened the door for another helmet to be added to Philadelphia's collection. The iconic Kelly Green was not going to be ready for the 2022 season, so the team elected to go with black helmets instead.

Philadelphia wore the black helmets three times during the 2022 season. Ironically, the first time the team wore them was against Green Bay in a Week 12 matchup. The Eagles emerged victorious in a 40-33 contest. The Eagles went on to lose 40-34 in the black helmets against the Cowboys in Week 16 but bounced back by ending the regular season with them on for a 22-16 win against the Giants.

While the Eagles kept their promise and went with Kelly Green throwbacks in 2023, this year the black returns. The Birds are hoping the black helmets will carry the same magic they had two years ago against the Packers when they first debuted.
