The New Orleans Saints and their fans already have plenty to worry about when it comes to the budding Derek Carr vs. Spencer Rattler debate without wondering what might happen in free agency next offseason with massive names.
But that won’t stop some from asking questions when it comes to names like Dak Prescott.
The superstar quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, after all, heads into the season without an extension and a no-tag clause that will let him test the open market in 2025.
And when looking at the Saints, the organization fits as one that might have interest if and when that happens. So much so, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox just listed them as one of the few sensible landing spots for Prescott in 2025 free agency:
“Prescott would be an upgrade over Carr, anyway, and could give the team the franchise quarterback it has lacked since Drew Brees' 2021 retirement. The Saints could offer a solid supporting cast and a homecoming of sorts to Prescott, who was born and played his high school ball in Louisiana.”
Given the apparent unwillingness of the Saints to actually rebuild (they’re currently projected to be nearly $100 million over the cap in 2025), going after Prescott would actually be in character. And the organization built an out into Carr’s contract after 2024, at least, to remain flexible at the position.
Of course, Carr putting together a nice season and the team exceeding some rather mild expectations while improving on last year’s 9-8 mark would render a lot of this moot. Now that Rattler seems to have some hype and potential, that would be a sensible avenue to explore, even if head coach Dennis Allen doesn’t stick around for the long-term.
But Prescott, still just 31 years old and an elite passer, would bring a different type of energy and production to the Saints. He’s certainly got “Saints stopgap” written all over him, so only a Carr outburst would really quiet future-minded analysis like this.
