Sherrone Moore addresses Michigan’s multiple weaknesses in blowout loss to Texas

Michigan was a mess in every facet on the football field on September 7 with No. 3 Texas in town. The Wolverines ceded 389 yards to Quinn Ewers (246 passing yards) and the Longhorns running back room (143 rushing yards) and were on the wrong end of a 31-12 final.

Sherrone Moore was surprisingly calm about the national champions getting badly beat in their first loss since the 2022 College Football Playoff against Georgia.

“The turnovers are easy to fix,” Moore said postgame to reporters . “On defense, it’s tackling… little things put you in a better position. But you can’t do those against good teams.”

Moore said he wouldn’t make any knee-jerk reactions to the game. Fair enough. However, Michigan has a massive matchup against USC in Week 4 which could determine if Moore is even the guy to lead the Wolverines in the post-Jim Harbaugh era. Another blowout is not going to satisfy a Big Blue fanbase that is now accustomed to deep College Football Playoff runs.

Moore’s insistence on keeping Davis Warren in the game despite two interceptions and minimal traction against a stout Texas defense was perhaps Moore’s gravest mistake of the afternoon. Warren had flashes of looking like a capable JJ McCarthy replacement, but the Wolverines couldn’t effectively set up the pass with the run.

From there, it was a slow grind battle that Michigan couldn’t compete in the trenches with Texas in.

Michigan gets a breather in Week 3 with Arkansas State. But Big Ten play looms, and Moore’s Wolverines may not be ready for it.
