Broncos start strong, fade fast in loss to Seahawks in Week 1

The way things started out for the Denver Broncos in Week 1, it certainly looked and felt like it was going to be a good day. The Seahawks looked like they couldn't get out of their own way and the Broncos, full of energy, were ready to capitalize.

On the second offensive play of the game, Geno Smith threw an interception that went right to Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton. He returned it to the Seattle 20-yard line and the Broncos were in business. The Broncos even had two first-half safeties , something no team had done in 13 years, to take a 10-9 lead into the half.

But things changed in the second half. The Seahawks made adjustments and the Broncos looked like a team that would struggle to even get a first down. The Seahawks were allowing the Broncos to complete short passes, tackling the receiver immediately, and almost daring Bo Nix to try and attack them down the field.

Nix completed 26 passes in the game yet threw for only 138 yards. That's an average of 3.3 yards per completion. The lack of an offensive playmaker or threat of stretching the field is why the Broncos lost this game.

The defense held its own but the Seahawks did find success attacking the edges in the running game in the second half. Kenneth Walker went over 100 yards rushing and had a touchdown on the day.

The Broncos lost their season opener for the third year in a row.

Broncos averaged less than 3 yards per play against Seahawks

The Broncos were just putrid offensively. In addition to the low yards per completion, they had only 99 total rushing yards and they turned the ball over three times. The safeties were the highlights of the game for them.

Things will have to get better when the Broncos have the ball. If not, this will look like the same team that it has for the past decade, one that just can't score enough points.

The Broncos will host their home opener next Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0).
