Aaron Rodgers is poised to appear in an NFL game for the first time since last September, as the Jets take on the 49ers on the first 'Monday Night Football' of the 2024 season.
Nearly a year ago, Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury four plays into his Jets tenure, setting the stage for another disappointing season in New York. Now, the 40-year-old quarterback is set to return for the season opener, despite not appearing in a preseason game.
So long as Rodgers is healthy, the Jets are saddled with high expectations. Running back Breece Hall and receiver Garrett Wilson make for two of the league's most dynamic skill players. And New York's defense, led by All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner and stout defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, is a menacing unit.
Like the Jets, much is expected of the 49ers. San Francisco fell just short of immortality last season, losing in overtime in the Super Bowl to the Chiefs.
And as the opener nears, things are looking up for the 49ers. Star running back Christian McCaffrey is primed for a typical workload in Week 1, despite missing most of training camp with calf and Achilles injuries. Meanwhile, contract drama for All-Pro tackle Trent Williams and receiver Brandon Aiyuk ended with new extensions for both players.
This marks the 15th all-time meeting between the Jets and 49ers, with San Francisco owning an 11-3 edge.
