Lions' Dan Campbell praises Jameson Williams, says the best is yet to come

The Detroit Lions entered the 2024 season with the hope that wide receiver Jameson Williams would step up in his third season. In Week 1, Williams did just that.

The 2022 first-round pick had a career-best game in the 26-20 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams , tallying five receptions for 121 yards and one touchdown, along with one carry for 13 yards.

The receiving yards and yards from scrimmage were not only tops on the team, but both were career-highs for him.

Williams' highlight of the night came when he torched Rams cornerback Tre'Davious White en route to a 52-yard touchdown reception on a dime from quarterback Jared Goff. In all, Williams had three receptions of 28 yards or more, showing just how explosive he can be.

After the game, head coach Dan Campbell heaped praise on the Alabama product but believes the best is yet to come for the third-year wideout, who received the game ball following his great night.

"He showed up," Campbell said of Williams, according to The Detroit News' Nolan Bianchi . "That was a big game...and the best part of it, he didn't even play his best ball. ... But it also shows the work that he's put in. ... He keeps taking these steps."

When addressing the media after the game, Williams noted that this was the first time he had taken the post-game podium. He also said the game ball was the first of his life at any level of football.

Williams has been through a lot over his first two years in the NFL. On top of having to recover from an injury in his first season, Williams got himself suspended in 2023.

With pressure mounting on him ahead of his third season in the NFL, Williams desperately needs to answer the bell and become the player the Lions envisioned him being when they drafted him with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

So far, he's on track to do that in 2024.
