We suppose the simplest and most obvious answer would be that she ran faster. But there’s more to understanding how Julien Alfred bested Sha’Carri Richardson in the women’s 100M final. Alfred herself gave what could be a reason for her dramatic win. “I woke up and wrote it down, ‘Julien Alfred, Olympic champion.’,” she said. “So I think believing in myself really was important.”

Okay so belief in oneself can help power a person to victory. However, there are other reasons for her win. And one of them is directly related to Sha’Carri Richardson’s style of running. It’s been pointed out before, but she has a developed a habit of starting slowly in her races. And she did that again in the 100M final. She is used to coming off the blocks slowly and then making up for it during the race.

This time her reaction time out of the blocks was 0.221 seconds compared to Alfred’s 0.144. And there was no coming back from a slow start this time. By the time she found her rhythm, Alfred was already gone and there would be no catching her. But to be fair, no one in the field was going to catch Alfred. She was lightening fast and pretty much blew past all the competition.

Now with this second place finish behind Alfred, Sha'Carri will likely put more emphasis on correcting that issue. So this was likely a good learning experience to help her elevate her game. And at only 24, Richardson can look forward to competing again at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic games. However, she will have another opportunity to win a gold in these games in the women’s 4X100M relay.

As for Alfred she is also young in her career and just 23 years old. She won the first Olympic medal, and a gold one at that, for the tiny island nation of St. Lucia. And the population of about 185,000 were extremely proud of her, hosting watch parties all over the island.

We’ll all have a chance to watch her run again at these games in the women’s 200M final. It will be interesting to see if she can win big in that race like she did in the 100M. If she wins that race then she will follow in the footsteps of Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica. She won the 100 and 200 at each of the last two Olympics.

And dare we speculate that we could see a rematch between Alfred and Richardson in the 2028 games?
