It’s been almost 30 years since Art Modell took his team and moved it to Baltimore. But the Browns were reinvented four years later as an expansion team in 1999. However, the Cleveland Browns are proposing to move their stadium from it’s current downtown location. After just 25 years it may seem odd to relocate the stadium from downtown Cleveland to the suburb of Brook Park, OH. The team’s lease at its current stadium expires after the 2028 season.

Today the Haslam Sports Group sent a letter to Cleveland Browns fans which included renderings of a dome stadium. They said they are still deciding between a renovation of Cleveland’s lakefront stadium. And the construction of a new domed stadium in Brook Park. However, the city of Cleveland provided a $1.1 billion plan to renovate their 25-year-old downtown stadium. The team is currently evaluating the City’s proposal. And have requested additional information from the City to enable them to comprehensively do so. Mayor Justin Bibb has asked the Browns for a response by Aug. 12

The city wants to keep the stadium right where it is. Believing that to be the best option to maintain the city’s growth and identity. But the team appears to be more inclined to relocate their stadium believing that relocation would be transformational. In the letter, they went on to say what building a $2.4 billion new domed stadium in Brook Park could do. Such as creating a modern, dynamic, world-class venue that would greatly enhance the fan experience. And enable the State of Ohio and their region to compete for some of the biggest events in the world 365 days a year.

Also, the team is not looking to tap into existing taxpayer-funded streams, which could divert resources from other pressing needs. That’s some good news for the residents of Cleveland. At any rate, it sounds like the Browns have made up their minds per the statement below:

“Similar to other markets in the Midwest, this proposed domed stadium would catalyze our region in a major way,” David Jenkins, chief operating officer of Haslam Sports Group, wrote in the letter. “The stadium’s year-round activity would anchor a large-scale lifestyle and entertainment district, including experiential retail, residential space, hotels and other unique products, drawing visitors throughout the year and driving substantial fiscal impact for our region.

So for better or for worse it doesn’t seem likely that the Browns will be renewing their lease in 2028.
