Going into the final weekend of the Summer Games we bring you our second to last Paris Olympics 2024 Medal Count update. It has been an absolute BATTLE for the title of most gold medal wins. Currently, Team USA finds itself locked in yet another tie for gold domination.

The United States biggest challenge and opponent to most golds glory has been the extremely talented delegation from China. Both countries now have 33 golds each. Furthermore, China’s athletes had a big surge this week thanks to dominating the pool in diving competitions. Both the men and women have been getting the job done for their country. This week they earned 10 medals in diving events with 7 of them being gold. The rest being 2 silver and 1 bronze medal.

Moreover, Team USA has also had a few “mishaps” over the last few days, especially in track and field. Events that seemed like a for sure thing, ended in disappointment. Such as the men’s 4×100 meters relay once again ending in disaster due to a disqualification from an unsuccessful batton exchange. The USA team included — Christian Coleman, Kenny Bednarek, Kyree King and Fred Kerley — the bungled handoff was between Coleman and Bednarek. After the race Coleman tells reporters,

“Obviously we all are going to be hard on ourselves. And track and field is an individual sport so we do our own thing in sprinting. So when we come together as a team, that’s the fun part of it. Obviously, it’s a little disappointing, especially for America, because we wanted to do it, we wanted to bring it home, we knew we had the speed to do it. It just didn’t happen, but we’re human beings too. We’ve been through ups and downs in life. This is another one of those times where we’ve got to just keep our heads down and keep pushing.”

Nevertheless, Team USA still has enjoyed plenty of triumphs this week as well. For instance, there was Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s gold winning performance in the women’s 400m hurdles. Rai Benjamin also demolished a stacked lineup of competitors in the men’s 400m hurdles; therefore, also winning gold. Other USA ladies to bring gold hardware back home this week include (these are just a few, there’s others): Wrestler Amit Elor, Olivia Reeves (weightlifting); Tara Davis-Woodhall (long jump); and the entire squad of the women’s 4x100m relay (Sha’Carri Richardson and Gabby Thomas were a part of this crew).

Plus, there’s still a few events to go. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to play in gold medal matches. And the USA players are favorites to win.

So then, the tiebreaker could come down to one of these events. Which would only be history repeating itself. Last Olympics in Tokyo, it came down to the VERY last day of competition. Team USA ended up returning home with the most gold medals.
