It’s not often that teams within the same division engage in trading players. However, that is what happened today in the NFC East division. The Washington Commanders traded WR Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles announced the trade today on the team’s website. They acquired Jahan Dotson from the Washington Commanders and a 2025 fifth-round draft pick; and are sending Washington a third- and two seventh-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Dotson was the 16th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Prior to the draft, he posted a 4.43 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. Having that kind of speed helped him to play with quickness and make explosive plays in the slot receiver position. During his rookie season he was twice named the Pepsi NFC Rookie of the Week for his play.

Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said in his post-practice press conference that he enjoyed working with Dotson and wished him the best going forward, but he’s also excited about what this means for the rest of the receivers still on the roster. The trade makes sense for the Commanders because they already have 12 receivers currently on the 90-man roster. With this trade they will pare down the roster while acquiring more picks for the 2025 NFL draft. Kingsbury was excited about his group of receivers.

“I’m very confident,” Kingsbury said. “They’ve made a bunch of plays so far in camp. I’ve been impressed with how they’ve gotten better since the spring and continue to improve. Very hard-working, competitive room.”

Dotson had one of the best games of his career last season in a wild 38-31 Eagles win over Washington at FedEx Field with eight receptions for 108 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown grab, on 10 targets. Since he didn’t beat the Eagles then, now he gets to join them. He’ll be a part of an offense that features wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, tight end Dallas Goedert, and running back Saquon Barkley. Dotson should fit in nicely with this group.

Moreover, looks like Jalen Hurts will have another weapon when it comes to pass-catching. The NFC East should be fun to watch.
