It’s not an overstatement to say the Falcons are loading up on the defensive side of the ball. Today the Falcons announced they will sign A.J. Terrell to a new contract extension. They extended cornerback A.J. Terrell’s contract through the 2028 season. Per Adam Schefter:

ESPN sources: Falcons are signing standout CB A.J. Terrell to a four-year, $81 million deal that includes $65.8 million in effectively full guarantees — the largest guarantee ever given to a corner on a four-year deal. Contract negotiated by David Mulugheta and Trevon Smith of Athletes First.

The new extension also makes Terrell the second highest paid cornerback ever, per Ian Rapoport. Terrell was taken by the Falcons with the 16th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Atlanta then picked up his fifth year option in April 2023 for the 2024 season. But now they have locked down their cornerback for years to come, and couldn’t be happier about it.

“We are very glad to be in the position to provide this extension for A.J., who is certainly well deserving of it,” Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said. “A homegrown player, he embodies the characteristics and traits we want as a Falcon. He leads by example with his work ethic, and as a great teammate he does anything he can to help this team win on a continuous basis. We appreciate the support of our owner, Arthur Blank, for providing the resources to reward players who operate the right way.”

Fontenot had also given similar praise to Terrell earlier this year:
“What’s cool about A.J. is I remember the first day that he got here several years ago, he was one of the first people I saw in the building, and he was constantly in the building and he’s still like that,” Fontenot said in March at the Annual League Meeting. “The worker, the consummate pro that he is, that’s what you get excited because that’s a hard position. … The way that he works, he’s just constantly growing, and that’s important.”

As mentioned earlier, the Falcons are loading up on defense. Their goal is stop their opponents right in their tracks. As Adam Schefter noted, in the last eight days they have now traded for Matthew Judon. Signed FA safety Justin Simmons. And also extended one of their own, CB AJ Terrell on a 4-year, $81M contract. The NFC South better beware.
