Last night general manager Brett Veach, joined the guys in the broadcast booth during the preseason game. He confirmed that the Kansas City Chiefs did lock down their center Creed Humphrey. Having a center that can protect your franchise quarterback is essential. In fact, that was part of the reason why the Chiefs couldn’t get past the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV. During that game Mahomes was scrambling for his life and forced to hold onto the ball. Really though the injured Chiefs offensive line struggled mightily that game, not just the center.

Enter Creed Humphrey of the University of Oklahoma taken by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Humphrey was entering into the final year of his standard rookie four-year contract. But now the Chiefs have signed him to a new extension as reported by Adam Schefter.

“ESPN Sources: Chiefs and Pro Bowl center Creed Humphrey reached agreement on a four-year, $72 million extension, including $50 million guaranteed. Humphrey now becomes the highest-paid center in NFL history. Deal negotiated by Ken Sarnoff and Andy Simms of 1 of 1 Agency.”

“Two-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super-Bowl champion Creed Humphrey now is contractually tied to the Chiefs through the 2028 season.”

The impact Humphrey made was immediate, as he quickly learned how to play at the professional level. He caught on so fast that he finished third in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. Can you imagine a center who showed so much talent and ability that he outshined several skill position players? Ja’Marr Chase of the Bengals won the award but the fact that Humphrey was in the running is not to be ignored.

Humphrey is generally recognized as the best center in the AFC. But since Jason Kelce, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles, retired after the 2023 season he’s the best in the league. It made sense to get the extension done because it looks like the sky is the limit for Humphrey. He is set to be a foundational player for the Chiefs for years to come. Also, Humphrey hasn’t missed a game in his three NFL seasons proving his durability and reliability.

And he is quite capable of helping Mahomes to stay upright in the pocket. The Chiefs have one of the best interior offensive line groups in the league. Having Joe Thuney and Trey Smith down in the trenches with Humphrey is a virtual wall for Mahomes to work behind. When a quarterback has time to work he can do great things. Now Humphrey has even more incentive to keep Mahomes well protected.
