This season of the WNBA has definitely been historic. It featured the most discussed and high profile rookie class ever in women’s basketball. Sold out games, sold out merch, new media deal and the highest television and streaming viewership ever. However, when athletes play hard and give it their all, injuries can ensue. Earlier this season W fans unfortunately watched LA Sparks rookie Cameron Brink suffer a season ending injury and now yet another rookie has been bitten by the “bug.” In an unexpected turn of events, the Chicago Sky confirms Angel Reese’s season ending injury due to her wrist.

The basketball franchise took to social media platform X to announce the unfortunate news about their star rookie player. The organization states,

“After undergoing further medical evaluation after the September 6 game against Los Angeles, Angel Reese has been ruled out for the rest of the 2024 season with a wrist injury, the team announced today. The team will provide medical updates later as needed.”

Certainly not the news any fans wanted, especially with the playoffs being right around the corner. Nevertheless, Angel had an amazing season. A record setting one at that. She ends her first year stats with:

    13.6 PPG
    13.1 RPG
    1.9 APG

    • Most rebounds in a season in WNBA history
    • Highest RPG average in a single season
    • Most consecutive double-doubles

Therefore, Reese still has plenty to be proud about this season. Nonetheless, Angel Reese also released her own separate statement about her injury. Explaining what this season has meant to her, as well as her plans and resolve for the future. Reese explains,

“What a year. I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2 lol

Through it all, I have showed that I belong in this league even when no one else believed. All I have ever wanted was to come into the W and make an impact. I can confidently say I have done that and will strive to keep doing so. I’m filled with emotions right now that I have a season ending injury, but also filled with so much gratitude for what is next. Although this is God’s timing and not mine, I am finally able to give myself a physical and mental break. ‘God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers.’

You’ll still see me being the biggest cheerleader on the sideline! And Unrivaled league, see you soon!”

So then, Reese seems focused on working hard to return stronger than ever next season. We wish her the best in her recovery and can’t wait to see her back on the court where she belongs.
