When the Denver Broncos open the 2024 NFL season, rookie Bo Nix will be the team’s starting quarterback. Find out more about the historic announcement below.

    Bo Nix Named Starting Quarterback

Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced that Nix will be the team’s starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. Payton announced the news after Wednesday’s practice.

“Bo Nix is gonna be our starting quarterback,” Payton told reporters on Wednesday. “I felt like, and I said this to you guys two weeks ago, you know, that room has been outstanding. (Jarrett) Stidham, certainly with his experience, and then being able to work with Zach Wilson, all three of those guys. We’ve got some tough decisions as we get into the roster.”

It’s a historic decision, as Nix becomes the first Broncos’ rookie quarterback to start in the regular-season opener since John Elway in 1983.

“Obviously, that’s great to share with such a great player like John Elway,” Nix told reporters via NFL.com. “Doesn’t matter when your first start is. Doesn’t matter if you have to wait or you go right now, you just want to go out there and get the win, and ultimately compete at a high level. … So that’s what my goal is at the beginning is just to give our team the best chance to win games.”

Jarrett Stidham will likely be the backup, with Zach Wilson as the third-string.

Bo Nix Is Having An Impressive Preseason

Through two preseason games, Nix has certainly looked the part of a starting quarterback.

The Broncos offense has scored on six of seven drives with Nix under center. Nix has completed 23 of 33 passes for 205 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

Nix is not an ordinary rookie. The 24-year-old played five seasons—three with Auburn and two with Oregon—of college football. Nix’s 61 starts (43-18) is the most in NCAA history for a quarterback.

Selected with the 12th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, Nix replaces former Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, who is now with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
