NASCAR Cup Series Quaker State 400 Available At Walmart Entry List: Dates, Event Times For Postseason Opener At Atlanta Motor Speedway

Despite feeling ill and fumbling his medicine after a handoff from a pit crew member during a Stage 2 pit stop Sunday night, Tyler Reddick overcame his nauseousness to earn a P10 during the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway and captured the NASCAR Cup Series regular-season championship by one point over Kyle Larson.

During Lap 119, Reddick said on the team radio that he felt like “throwing up” and “s#!%%ing” himself. Considering he works for NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan, it could be his version of the “Flu Game.”

“Well, I wasn’t going to by choice park it, I was worried that (at) the end of Stage 1 there when it finally ended, I was having to focus more on having to hold back puke than driving the car and I was just worried I was going to just start puking and not be able to drive and crash and end my way that way, just by crashing,” Reddick told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “Because like, I don’t know. I’ve never been able to really, for those that have puked right? I feel like it’s pretty hard to puke and do something else at the same time so I was just worried my day was going to end that way because of that.”

Much like Jordan, who scored 38 points despite having difficulty to simply stand at times during the Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals, Reddick overcame illness during a title quest. Reddick, who won two races this season, paced the circuit with 11 top-five finishes and 18 top-10s through the opening 26 events. The Round of 16 playoffs begin Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

“Yeah, it’s just a testament to all the hard work that everyone at 23XI, here at the race track, week in and week out,” Reddick said, as reported by NASCAR.com.

As a first-time regular-season champion, Reddick received 15 bonus playoff points.
