SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — After nearly two years, a statue honoring a civil rights icon is available for the public to view again.

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office confirmed the Martin Luther King Jr. statue would stand again at its pedestal across from 2nd Street facing the Capitol starting Monday. Officials previously announced the statue would return in July last month.

The statue was knocked down in Sept. 2022. Then 24-year-old Fernando Martinez Garcia was charged with criminal damage to state property for vandalizing the statue which, he pleaded guilty to in 2023. The statue has been in storage since that incident.
