    Extreme heat prompts longer pool hours, cooling centers in Springfield

    SPRINGFIELD, MO — The Springfield-Greene County Park Board will keep some pools open a bit longer and open up cooling centers on Tuesday ahead of Independence Day due to extreme heat forecasted.

    The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Greene County for Tuesday, July 2 from noon to 8 p.m.

    To help residents cool off and stay safe during Heat Advisories, the Springfield-Greene County Park Board is adjusting pool schedules and opening cooling center options as follows. These extra options are available only during Heat Advisories.

    Pools & Fountain Showers

    When staffing and facilities are available, the Park Board strives to keep one outdoor pool open late during Heat Advisories, including:

    • Tues., July 2, Westport Pool, 3125 W. Lincoln St., open until 8 p.m.
    • Outdoor pool admission is $4 for youth and seniors and $5 for adults from 1-5:30 p.m.

    Admission to all locations drops to $1 or free with a canned food donation every day, 5:30-6:30 p.m., and that discount rate also extends to 8 p.m. when pools remain open late. Food donations benefit Ozarks Food Harvest .

    The public is also welcome to cool off in the water at the Ozarks Stream and Fountain at Jordan Valley Park , 635 E. Trafficway. Fountains run daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with fountain shows every hour on the hour. Admission is free.

    4th of July Splash & Sizzle

    On Thursday, July 4, the Park Board offers discount Splash & Sizzle pricing all day at Fassnight and Silver Springs pools from 1-6:30 p.m. Admission on July 4 is $1 or free with a canned food donation.

    Cooling Centers

    All three Springfield-Greene County Park Board Family Centers, as well as Jordan Valley Ice Park, open their entrance lobbies as free public cooling centers during Heat Advisories. All lobbies have seating, restroom access and air conditioning. No formal programming is planned.

    • 735 E. Trafficway, 417-866-7444
    • Daily, 12-5 p.m.
    • This cooling center entrance is the east-side door (facing the Jordan Valley Park fountains)
