    Back to School Bash and Tax-free Weekend coming soon

    SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – In less than one month, the largest school district in Missouri will be back in class.

    Springfield Public Schools starts on Monday, August 19, 2024, and in anticipation of the new school year, the Back to School Bash, as well as the Missouri and Arkansas Tax-Free weekend, are coming up.

    On Saturday, July 27, 2024, Springfield Public Schools Back to School Bash will be held at the Springfield Expo Center from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. The bash is open to all SPS students and families. Students can get free backpacks, hygiene kits, groceries, school supplies, sports physicals and more.

    The Kansas City Chiefs Mascot KC Wolf will be in attendance. A photo op with KC Wolf will be available. In 2023, more than 5,000 people attended the Back to School Bash.

    Both Missouri and Arkansas will have their annual back-to-school sales tax holiday, starting on Friday, August 2 and running until Sunday, August 4. Items such as clothing, school supplies, and computers are exempt from sales tax during the three days.

    According to the Missouri Department of Revenue , the sales tax exemption is limited to:

    • Clothing – any article having a taxable value of $100 or less.
    • School supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase
    • Computer software – taxable value of $350 or less
    • Personal computers – not to exceed $1,500
    • Computer peripheral devices – not to exceed $1,500
    • Graphing calculators – not to exceed $150

    The tax-free holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August. The sales tax holiday applies to state and local sales taxes.
