Central High senior earns school year's first Student of the Week title

As fall lurks behind persistent summer heat, it is time to recognize and celebrate our first Student of the Week of the school year.

This week, the title goes to Trevor Wilson of Central High School. Wilson, described as an amazing young man and all-around kid, is a leader in the classroom, on the football field and basketball court. Because of his insatiable work-ethic and athletic abilities, he has secured several football scholarships. Wilson's character and academic prowess shine in every interaction.

Student of the Week is an initiative by the News-Leader to highlight the academic achievements of local area high school students. Nominations for students who have shown outstanding academic and school achievement and community service are gathered from administrators at participating districts in the Ozarks.

Besides Wilson, here's who else was nominated this week.

Kai Schaefer, Greenwood Laboratory School: In April, Kai advanced to the semifinals of the National Geography Bee in Arlington, Virginia. As one of more than 130 students from 25 states in the competition, Kai also qualified for the International Geography Bee World Championship in Vienna, Austria. There, Kai earned a bronze medal and three fourth place finishes competing against 90 high schoolers. In total, Kai finished in the top 10 seven times and top five four times across several geography events.

Aven Goodnight, Nixa High School: Aven is the student body president this year, and is described as exemplifying the values, character and leadership Nixa High School hopes to instill in all of their students. The senior balances her student government duties with multiple AP and dual credit courses, and also finds time to compete in cross country for her school.

Cameron Coring, Summit Preparatory School: Cameron's passion for music shines brightly both on stage and behind the scenes. This talented senior is a key member of the school's audition-only rock band, the All-Stars, through which he has discovered a deep love for music and music production, leading him to create and produce his own tracks now featured on Spotify.
