Push for business ownership in Eugene continues during Black Business Month
Black Business Month is underway, and across Eugene, there's a push to make business ownership more than just a distant dream for budding entrepreneurs. Nationwide, the month of August is designated as a time to celebrate black businesses, entrepreneurship, and ongoing efforts to welcome black people into a lane once barred.
Ems Shut Out Dust Devils
The Eugene Emeralds turned the tide on the Tri-City Dust Devils last night, giving back what they received the night before, a 3 hit shutout. The Ems bunched their runs in two innings with a 3 run first inning and a 4 run third inning. First baseman Bryce Eldridge got it all started with a 3 run homer. A series of doubles in the fourth accounted for those runs. The two teams are back at it this evening. The Ems are trying to stay out of the basement at this point with the season drawing to a close.
Jesuit grad Charlie Pickard vying for starting center role for Oregon football
EUGENE — Last season, Bryce Boettcher became the first walk-on to start for Oregon since 2017. Charlie Pickard might made make it back-to-back years. Pickard, a redshirt-junior, has been taking a significant number of reps at center with the first-team offense during fall camp and is contending for the starting job when the No. 3 Ducks open the season against Idaho on Aug. 31.

FORT UMPQUA DAYS HAPPENING OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND
Elkton Community Education Center has its annual Fort Umpqua Days during Labor Day weekend, on Saturday August 31st and Sunday September 1st. An ECEC release said historic reenactors will set up camp on the grounds of Fort Umpqua, a life-sized replica of a Hudson’s Bay trading fort, to show what life was like in the Umpqua Valley in the mid-1800s. Guests can visit with trappers, press their own cider, enjoy kid’s activities and visit live animal exhibits.
