SPRINGFIELD, NJ -- The 10U Springfield Minutemen baseball team won the championship of its division of the New Providence Green League on Monday night with a 7-3 victory over Clark at Roesnner Field.
On the mound to start was Kyle Fitzgerald, who went five stellar innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out seven. Mike DeMaio came on in relief, striking out two and earning the save.
Clark scored three runs in the top of the first inning after a two-run triple, and tag-up on a subsequent fly ball.
Down, 3-2, heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Springfield Minutemen took control and never looked back. Fitzgerald singled to knock in Dante Catania, followed by a Paul Santangelo ground-ball single that scored Gio Cocuzza and Fitzgerald.
Then in the fifth inning, up, 5-3, Springfield’s DeMaio smoked a double to left field, followed by a Nick D’Egidio ground ball that was overthrown at first and, with his speed, allowed him to reach third. A bases-loaded walk by Lucas Praizner allowed D’Egidio to score and take the lead, 7-3.
After the victory, championship trophies were handed out to each player. Springfield’s Baseball League also announced they will be hanging a banner at Roesnner Field recognizing their accomplishment.
“I’m so proud of this team, all of the work they’ve put in over the last few years, with everyone contributing to our team’s success this season,” said head coach Paul Santangelo. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them. Hopefully, it’s the first of many championships for Springfield.”
The 10U Summer Minutemen squad includes: Dante Catania, Gio Cocuzza, Mike DeMaio, Nick D’Egidio, Kyle Fitzgerald, Sammy Gamarekian, Billy Hildebrand, Lucas Praizner, Paul Santangelo, Hudson Wormuth and Vincent Ur.
